Lest we forget

On 6 June 1976, Sabah Air’s GAF N-22B Nomad, carrying Sabah’s fifth Chief Minister, Tun Datuk Haji Mohd. Fuad Stephens and six other State ministers, crashed just 3 km away from the then Kota Kinabalu Airport, killing all 11 passengers on board the aircraft.

A monument known as the Double Six Monument was later built at the crash site in order to commemorate the tragedy.

The incident, which marked a significant event in Sabah’s history, is remembered every year and this year’s 42nd Double Six Commemoration Ceremony was held at the monument at 7am this morning.

The commemoration was attended by YB Jimmy Wong, representing Sabah’s Chief Minister YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Mohd. Shafie bin Haji Apdal, who also led the wreath-laying ceremony.

Sutera Harbour Resort’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mr Gerard Tan was also there for the wreath-laying ceremony and to show solidarity to family members of the victims.

Other VIPs and all attendees also paid their tribute to the victims of the crash with a minute’s silence.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, everyone visited the Double Six Gallery which showcases photos of the fallen and other Sabah’s political champions. Attendees also got a glimpse of the lives of Sabah’s lost illustrious sons and freedom fighters.

The ceremony ended at 9am with everyone enjoying a morning refreshment before going home.
